The world’s whitest paint recently found its way to the Guinness Book of World Records 2022. Developed by a team of engineers at Purdue University, this ultra-white paint is said to reflect 98.1% of the sunlight, compared to the 80-90% reflectivity of other currently available white paints. It is stated that coating buildings with this white paint, will keep cities cooler, resulting in far less reliance on the “energy-hungry” air conditioning. Game-changer.
Breaking a record for the whitest paint wasn’t a goal for the researchers – curbing global warming was. Professor Xiulin Ruan, who was part of this study, states, “When we started this project about seven years ago, we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind.”
Climate change is indeed a global fight. We’ve had years of bombardment on the ‘what-to’, ‘how-to’ of climate change. We are reminded of greenhouse gas emissions. It is said, as we cool our homes, we warm the planet.
Sadly, even the concept of ‘home’ cannot be taken for granted. The Groundswell 2.0 report was recently released by the World Bank. It warns, that with unchecked climate change, 216 million people would have to migrate within their own countries by 2050!
Groundswell 2.0 co-author and the World Bank’s lead environment specialist, a Malaysian – Dr Kanta Kumari Rigaud emphasizes, “We have to reduce or cut our greenhouse gases to meet the Paris target, because those climate impacts are going to escalate and increase the scale of climate migration.”
Each of us must already be doing our share for the climate and environment. Doesn’t matter if it’s big or small.
What’s your ‘White Paint’ around climate going to be?
