Reinventing 21st Century Learning - MAPS National Convention 2017

Theme: Reinventing the 21st Century Learning.

The two day programme was interesting and educational for all who joined the event..

Day 1 started with a warm welcoming speech by our MAPS President, Mr Anthony Fernandez. He explained that reinvention theme focused with coming up with new learning methodologies that engaged the learner fully. All learning is rooted in 3 major areas, namely cognitive (LOTS: remember, understand and apply; HOTS: analyse, create and evaluate), affective (value, attitude and behaviour) and psychomotor (physical and kinaesthetic) aspects.

The Speakers Topics included: Creating a Trailer, Industrial Revolution 4.0, Accelerated Learning and Game Based Learning with innovative games to reinforce learning effectively.  Mr Nabil Doss, President of the Global Speakers Federation enlighten the audience by demonstrating how to highlight important moments in their talks and training by sharing the lessons he learned in creating trailers for Hollywood movies.

Day one had a pleasant surprise when MAPS EXCO rolled out a birthday cake for the VIP speaker, Dato' CM Vignesvaran. This was immediately after his talk on Industrial Revolution 4.0.  Day one ended with a very exciting Master Class on Game Based Learning. Mr Zairul, who did the game based learning session is very experienced in this area.

Day two was equally exciting. MAPS Professional Members got a chance to demonstrate their skills through a new MAPS talk format called 'TEN TALKS'. For the audience, it was an exciting manner to learn about the many topics on speaking and training in one place.  We also had the privilege of listening to a beautiful poem during Mr Gerald Green's Ten Talk,

“You can love me, but I must make me happy.
You can teach me, but I must do the learning.
You can guide me, but I will have to walk the path.
You can coach me, but I must win that game.

 You can even promote me, but I must be successful.
You can even pity me, but I will still have to bear the sorrow.
For the gift of love is not the food that feeds me;
It is the sunshine that nourishes what I must finally harvest for myself.
So, if you love me, don’t just sing me a song;
Teach me to sing, for when I am alone I will need the melody.”

Incidentally, Mr Gerald Green is MAPS’ second president and the celebrity speaker of the highest Toastmaster standards. He was responsible for creating the Toastmaster South East Asia Council. It is he as a founder member of MAPS who said that MAPS is the professional body that Toastmaster grads should join as the next step in their speaking development. In a surprising welcome of fate,Mr Paul Narula, who represented Thailand in the initial formation of Toastmaster SEA Council was also present. Two other celebrity in the audience was Mr Jonathan Low, Past President of GSF and Ms Shari Bricks, executive director of GSF.

In the afternoon was another Master Class by Nabil Doss who shared how to take their presentation skills to the next levels. The audience and professional speakers learned how to further their skills from a truly world class master. All in all it was a remarkable event of sharing and learning. Now I am waiting for the next MAPS convention in 2018..
